Mobile Emulators

  1. Install ActiveSync (for XP systems) or Windows Mobile Device Center (for Vista):
    1. Visit http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/activesync/default.mspx then follow the instructions to download the installer appropriate for your system. (You can ignore the note for the Windows Mobile Device Center: "Your device must be connected to your PC for the Windows Mobile Device Center to launch after installation").
    2. Run the installer.
    3. Restart if prompted.
  2. Install the Windows Mobile 6 Emulator:
    1. Visit http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=38C46AA8-1DD7-426F-A913-4F370A65A582 to download your required set(s) of localized emulator images. You can download "Standard images for Standard devices" and/or "Professional images for Classic or Professional devices".
    2. Run the installer.
  3. If you are working on an XP system configure ActiveSync:
    1. Launch ActiveSync from the Start menu.
    2. Select File, Connection Settings then select Allow connections to one of the following and select DMA.
  4. If you are working on a Vista system configure Windows Mobile Device Center:
    1. Launch Windows Mobile Device Center from the Start menu.
    2. Accept the licensing terms.
    3. Select Mobile Device Settings, Connection Settings then select Allow connections to one of the following and select DMA.
  5. Run the Windows Mobile 6 Emulator:
    1. If not already running, launch ActiveSync (for XP) or Windows Mobile Device Center (for Vista).
    2. Launch the Device Emulator Manager from the Start menu by selecting Windows Mobile 6 SDK, Tools, then Device Emulator Manager.
    3. Launch the emulator from the Start menu by selecting Windows Mobile 6 SDK, Standalone Emulator Images, if required choose a language, then select the emulator you want to use.
  6. In the Device Emulator Manager, select the running emulator (you may need to click the Refresh button to see it), right-click then select Cradle. This will cause ActiveSync or the Windows Mobile Device Center to connect to the emulator: you can dismiss any pop-ups that appear. ActiveSync or the Windows Mobile Device Center will show a status of Connected.
  7. You can connect the emulator to Internet without using ActiveSync:
    1. Install for free Microsoft VirtualPC 2007: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=04d26402-3199-48a3-afa2-2dc0b40a73b6
    2. Launch the emulator as described bellow, but don't "cradle".
    3. Within the emulator window, Click on File / Configure / Network and check "Enable NE2000 PCMCIA network adapter and bind to" then select your Internet network card. Push OK to accept changes and reset the emulador with File / Reset / Soft.
    4. Once launched, the emulator is already connected to your network but you must configure windows mobile's network settings. From witih Windows Mobile, go to Settings / Connections / Network Cards and select "NE2000 Compatible ethernet driver". Check "My network card connects to: The Internet" and type your network settings if needed (IP, netmask, DNS...). Check that the emulator is succesfully connected to the Internet. If failed make sure that you are connected to the correct network from the upper tray icon.
    5. You may want to save emulator state to avoid entering network settings everytime.
